Our Life and Vitality from the Holy Spirit
A Watchman Nee Sermon Summary
We can’t control our spiritual life with our thoughts, emotions, and impulses, which are influenced by our flesh and our environment.
It’s the Holy Spirit that gives birth to our spirit. Only God can give us a new life. When we believe in Christ, the Holy Spirit comes and resides within us. This is totally beyond our understanding and feeling (John 3:6, Ephesians 4:30).
The Holy Spirit’s presence isn’t something that we earn. It’s a gift, based on our faith in Christ. During the Pentecost, the Holy Spirit poured on the disciples not to reward anything they had done, but to exalt Christ as Lord and Messiah (Acts 2:32-36).
With the Holy Spirit in us, we have a new heart and a new spirit. The Holy Spirit testifies that we are children of God (Ezekiel 36:26-27, Romans 8:16).
Though the Holy Spirit is in us, we are still responsible for our choices. Unfortunately, many still follow their feelings and do what is right in their own eyes.
One main reason we don’t surrender to God is because we don’t realize that the Holy Spirit is present within us. We don’t recognize the Holy Spirit’s power, which raised Christ from the dead (Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 3:16).
With the living God in us, how can we be our own master? We are only stewards of all we have, including our families, possessions, and time. Surrender to God absolute lordship so that your spirit may be strengthened (Ephesians 1:18).
Stop fighting on your own. Our spirit doesn’t depend on our strength. Instead, let God do His work. Live according to the Spirit and walk by the Spirit, so that you can be full of life, with true peace and in communion with God (Romans 8:4, Galatians 5:16).
The more we live according to the Holy Spirit and listen to His voice—rather than the noise of our own emotions—the more God will change us. We will come to depend on what God is doing in us, not on what’s happening outside, so that through God’s guidance and help, our lives will gradually become sanctified.
