Missionaries Mindset
John Piper's Sermons Summary
A missionary’s calling is to go where the name of Christ is not known. Christ’s sacrifice reconciles us with God. Accepting Christ leads to satisfaction and joy. God is most glorified among those most satisfied in Him (Romans 15:18-20, 12:1-2; Revelation 5:9).
Missionaries seek to bring the Gospel to all before the end comes. Christ said He must bring in other sheep outside the fold, referring to the non-believers. We need missionaries for the least-reached people groups of the world.
Missionaries should know that they can’t soften hearts; only God can and will. Missionaries persevere. Their perseverance is sustained by God through faith in His promise to grant repentance and faith, and Christ’s promise to be with them always (Acts 7:51, 18:9-10; 2 Timothy 2:25; Philippians 1:29; Jeremiah 32:40; Matthew 24:14, 28:18-20; John 10:16).
Missionaries should also know that not all sheep belong to Christ. Those sheep belonging to Christ were given to Him by the Father. Christ calls Himself their shepherd, and they are justified by His death. They recognize Christ’s voice and follow Him. God keeps them in His hand forever, giving them eternal life that can’t be taken away.
In other words, God’s sovereignty and supremacy dictate who belong and who don’t. No one can frustrate God’s plan by their own will (John 6:37; 10:3, 4, 11, 14-16, 26-30; 17:6; Romans 8:29-30).
It’s not uncommon for missionaries to suffer in the process. They need to continue trusting and serving Him. Look to the purpose of God in the suffering.
Christians shouldn’t get so absorbed with the refinement of the Christian doctrine that we don’t give ourselves to the reaching of the lost. If we love God and His people, we have three options: go, support others who go, or disobey.
Christ’s sheep are in any and every people group. Missionaries only need to speak by the power of the Holy Spirit what Christ has done through them. It’s not the missionaries who are calling, but the Shepherd, and His own sheep will come and follow Him (John 10:16, 11:51-52, 17:18, 17:20, 20:21; Revelation 5:9; Romans 15:18).
