Know What the Holy Spirit Does
A Billy Graham Sermon Summary
Pope John once said the world’s greatest need was the Holy Spirit’s teaching and ministry. The Holy Spirit helps connect us with God and live a Christian life (John 14:16-18, 1 Corinthians 12:1).
The Holy Spirit is the third member of the Trinity. He is all-powerful, ever-present, and eternal. He knows all things, with nothing hidden from Him (Psalm 139:7, John 16:7, Hebrew 9:14).
Although we are made in God’s image, our spirit is dead towards God. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and shows us our need to repent and turn to Christ. This can be through tragedies, sermons, or other life experiences. Through Christ, the Holy Spirit frees us from the bondage of sin and the law (John 16:8, Ephesians 2:1).
We are born again by the Holy Spirit so that we may enter God’s Kingdom. This is God’s gift; we do not earn it. With the Holy Spirit, we can follow God and keep ourselves clean (John 3:3, Titus 3:5, Ezekiel 36:27, 1 Corinthians 3:16).
The Holy Spirit gives us a new desire to become more like Christ. He helps us grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ. The Holy Spirit produces in us His fruit, such as joy, peace, and love for those we couldn’t before. He makes us holy and empowers us to serve Christ (1 Corinthians 2:10, 1 Peter 1:15-16, Acts 1:8).
Every Christian receives different gifts from the Holy Spirit—such as speaking in tongues, or abilities in administration or teaching—to witness for Christ and build up His body, the church.
Remember that the Holy Spirit comes to exalt Christ and is pleased if we can glorify Christ (John 16:13-14).
Don’t grieve and anger the Holy Spirit. You will have no salvation if you hear the Holy Spirit but deliberately resist. To deny the Spirit is to ignore and insult the sanctifying blood of Christ (Hebrews 10:28-29).
Therefore, give in to the Holy Spirit. Invite Christ to be your Lord and Savior, so that you may have your sins forgiven and a new life led by the Holy Spirit.
