Summary of a Lesson by Francis Chan Spend time alone with God, studying His word—that’s the most important lesson. Learn directly from God’s word, instead of becoming dependent on someone else to explain it to you. This was what Peter emphasized to his followers right before his death.
After resurrection, Christ told Peter that when Peter was young, he did what he wanted to do, and when old, Peter would be crucified. Immediately after saying that, Christ told Peter to follow Him. Basically, Christ told Peter he would die following Him, but that it was worth it (John 21:18-19). Then at the end of Peter’s life, when he knew he would be tortured to death, Peter told his followers not to follow him. He told them it wasn’t about him, but God’s word (2 Peter 1:12-21). Some of us assume we will live in our body forever. But we should know that we get closer to death every day. Are we ready to meet God? Do we have anything to show? Are we still trying to accumulate more earthly possessions? Or have we wisely focused on God, given away our earthly possessions, helped others, and encouraged those around us to follow God? Peter told his followers that these weren’t just cleverly devised stories. He personally witnessed Christ’s death and His transfiguration. Peter encouraged them to focus on the completely reliable scripture, prophetic messages that came not from man, but from God. Therefore, they should pay attention to these messages, which were like a light shining in a dark place, a morning star rising in their hearts. These prophetic messages are the truth. The church is the pillar of truth, and we are the ones upholding them (2 Peter 1:15-21, Matthew 17, 1 Timothy 3:15). Therefore, pay close attention to God’s word. Study God’s word carefully, even to the point of trembling at His word. Spend time alone with God and His word. That’s the most important lesson (Isaiah 66:2).
